TOPIC: THE SUPERIOR LIFE IN CHRIST

THEME SCRIPTURE: "If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" —2 Corinthians 5:17

PREPARATORY QUESTION
Are you still living out of an identity Christ already ended, or the one he actually gave you?

There's a strange kind of loyalty many believers have toward their old life — not because it was good, but because it was familiar. Old patterns, old labels, old ways of coping with pain, old assumptions about who we are and what we're capable of. Even after conversion, we often keep visiting a house that's already been condemned, as if returning there proves something or feels safer than fully inhabiting the new one we were given.

Paul's language here is not gradual. He doesn't say the old is fading, or being renovated, or slowly replaced. He says it has gone — decisively, completely, finished. And in its place, something new has come, not as an upgrade to the old self, but as an entirely different order of existence. This is not self-improvement. It's resurrection. You are not a better version of who you were. You are someone who no longer exists in the same category.

This matters because so much of our struggle is theological before it's practical. We fight sin as though we're still who we used to be, trying to behave our way out of an identity Christ already terminated. But Scripture's logic runs the other way: you don't become new by acting different. You act different because you actually are new, and it's time to start living like it.

The old life's claims on you were legally settled at the cross. Its voice may still echo, familiar and persistent, but an echo has no authority — only volume. The real question isn't whether the old life still speaks. It's whether you still answer.

PRAYER
Father, thank you that in Christ I am not repaired — I am new. Forgive me for still answering to a life that's already ended. Teach me to live from my new identity rather than toward it, trusting that what you've finished is truly finished. In Jesus' precious name, Amen.
