TOPIC: ABIDING: THE BELIEVER'S SOURCE OF AUTHORITY

THEME SCRIPTURE: "I am the vine, ye are the branches... If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you." —John 15:5, 7 (KJV)

PREPARATORY QUESTION
Do you understand that your authority in Christ is lent to you, not owned — and does your daily life reflect that dependence?

Yesterday we saw that Christ breathed authority into His disciples. But authority without a source becomes presumption. A branch doesn't produce fruit by effort; it produces fruit by connection. This is where many believers stumble — they want the results of authority without the discipline of abiding.

Jesus is precise here. The promise isn't "ask whatever you will and it shall be done." It's conditional: *if* you abide, *if* His words abide in you. Authority flows through relationship, not through position or personality. A disconnected branch may still look like a branch, but it produces nothing.

This matters because authority always gets tested — in moments of conflict, temptation, or when someone needs you to speak truth you'd rather avoid. In those moments, borrowed strength runs out fast. Only what's rooted holds.

Abiding isn't passive. It's the daily choice to stay attached — through Scripture that shapes your thinking, prayer that keeps you honest, and obedience that proves you're not just listening but yielding. Authority without abiding becomes noise: right words, no weight behind them.

Notice too that fruit-bearing glorifies the Father, not the branch (v.8). Authority was never given for personal elevation. It was given so life would flow through you to others — so people would encounter Christ's power operating in your ordinary obedience.

PRAYER
Father, I don't want borrowed strength that runs dry. Teach me to abide — to stay close, to let Your Word shape me daily. Let my life bear fruit that points to You, not to myself. Keep me rooted, so that whatever authority I carry is real, sustained, and Yours. In Jesus' name, Amen.
