TOPIC: CORRECTION BEFORE COMMISSION
THEME SCRIPTURE: “If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off.” — Mark 9:43
PREPARATORY QUESTION
What attitude, habit, or relationship might God be asking me to confront before it compromises my effectiveness?
In Mark 9:35, Jesus corrected His disciples about greatness and exclusivity, He addressed something even more serious: the things that can cause a person to stumble.
Jesus said, “If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off” (Mark 9:43). His language was deliberately strong. He was not prescribing physical self-harm; He was teaching the seriousness of removing anything that repeatedly draws us away from God.
This is an important Christian principle. Before we focus on what we are called to accomplish as believers, we must examine what could sabotage our obedience.
The disciples were thinking about position, recognition, and who belonged to their circle. Jesus redirected them toward character. Kingdom effectiveness cannot be separated from personal holiness.
Sometimes the greatest threat to a person's assignment is not an external enemy but an unchecked attitude within. Pride can destroy teamwork. Jealousy can poison relationships. Uncontrolled ambition can distort decisions. Offence can turn servants into critics. And familiarity with spiritual things can make us careless about spiritual character.
Jesus therefore teaches us to deal decisively with whatever consistently leads us away from Him. Some things cannot simply be managed; they must be removed. Some conversations cannot be postponed. Some habits cannot be accommodated. Some relationships require boundaries.
Paul reinforces the same principle: “Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature” (Colossians 3:5). The Christian life requires deliberate choices about what we permit to remain.
God's correction is not intended to diminish us. It prepares us. He removes what threatens our character so that our calling can be carried with integrity.
Key Takeaway
Before God enlarges our assignment, He may first require us to remove attitudes and habits that could compromise it.
Precious one, do not protect what God is asking you to surrender. Deal decisively with whatever repeatedly weakens your obedience, character, relationships, or witness.
God bless you more.
