TOPIC: I AM AN HEIR OF GOD
Theme Scripture: "The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ” —Romans 8:16-17
PREPARATORY QUESTION
Do I live with the confidence and responsibility of someone who belongs to God’s family?
One of the greatest truths of the Christian faith is that salvation does not only rescue us from sin; it brings us into God’s family. Through Christ, believers receive a new identity—not as outsiders trying to earn acceptance, but as children who have been welcomed by the Father.
Paul writes, “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ” (Romans 8:16-17). An heir is someone who has a rightful share because of their relationship with the one who gives the inheritance. Our spiritual inheritance is not based on our achievements, status, or perfection. It is based on God’s grace and our relationship with Him through Christ.
Knowing that we are heirs changes how we approach life. We no longer live with the mindset of abandonment, insecurity, or constant striving for worth. We live with the assurance that our Father knows us, cares for us, and has prepared a future for us.
However, being an heir also carries responsibility. A child of God is called to represent the character and values of the Father. Our inheritance is not an excuse for pride or entitlement; it is a reason to walk in gratitude, obedience, and faithfulness.
The world may measure success by possessions, influence, or recognition, but God defines our greatest privilege by relationship with Him. To be an heir of God means we have received a hope that cannot be taken away and a purpose that extends beyond this present life.
