TOPIC: RESPONDING WISELY TO OFFENSE
THEME SCRIPTURE: “Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.” — Ecclesiastes 7:9
PREPARATORY QUESTION
How do you usually respond when someone disappoints, insults, or offends you?
Offense is one of the enemy’s most effective tools for damaging relationships, disturbing peace, and weakening spiritual growth. If not handled carefully, hurt can quietly grow into bitterness, resentment, and division. That is why Scripture repeatedly warns believers to guard their hearts and respond wisely when offense comes.
Not every offense is intentional. Sometimes people speak carelessly, misunderstand situations, or act from their own pain and immaturity. While this does not excuse wrongdoing, it reminds us that reacting impulsively often creates deeper wounds rather than healing them.
One of the greatest dangers of offense is that it narrows perspective. Hurt feelings can cause people to misinterpret actions, assume motives, and respond emotionally instead of prayerfully. Wisdom requires slowing down before reacting.
says, “The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.” Spiritual maturity is often revealed in the ability to remain controlled, thoughtful, and gracious under pressure.
Forgiveness is also essential in overcoming offense. Forgiveness does not always mean ignoring wisdom, boundaries, or accountability, but it does mean refusing to carry bitterness in your heart. Unresolved offense eventually harms the offended person more than the offender.
teaches believers to put away bitterness, wrath, and malice while choosing kindness and forgiveness. A peaceful heart cannot coexist with constant resentment.
There are moments when honest conversation is necessary, but even then, responses should be guided by humility and grace rather than anger. The goal should not be to win arguments, but to pursue peace and righteousness.
Key Takeaway
Wisdom in moments of offense protects your peace, preserves relationships, and prevents bitterness from taking root in your heart.
Precious one, you cannot avoid every opportunity for offense, but you can choose how you respond. Ask God today for wisdom, emotional discipline, and a heart that remains tender rather than hardened, to live above offenses.
Remain blessed.
