TOPIC: COMMITMENT TO DIVINE PROVIDENCE
THEME SCRIPTURE: “The Lord God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house, and from the land of my kindred, and who spoke to me, and swore to me, saying, ‘Unto your seed will I give this land’; He shall send His angel before you, and you shall take a wife unto my son from there.” – Genesis 24:7
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- How was Abraham so sure that God will send his angel ahead of his servant Eliezer?
It was time for Isaac to marry. Abraham and his family were the only people of his kind living among the Canaanites. How is Isaac going to get a wife who will help him in fulfilling God’s promise? You know, if you are conscious of the kind of future God is bringing you into, you are careful of your actions today and every other day. As a result, Abraham called the steward of his house to swear to him never to take a Canaanite woman as a wife for Isaac (Gen 24:3-4). Eliezer, has been with Abraham most of his life. Mesopotamia, where Abraham is expecting him to go and look for a wife for Isaac was many miles away. How is he going to just enter this country and start searching for the right woman? With what formula is he going to get this job done. Should he hire a detective to profile some women in Mesopotamia for him?
There was no social media, dating apps or Google search engine. What is Eliezer going to do?
When the day came, Eliezer took ten camels and did set out towards Mesopotamia (Gen 24:10). Having arrived, this servant of Abraham already knew his job was not going to be an easy one. What is he going to do? If you were in his shoes, what will be your tactical plan? Eliezer remembered that his master has a God; the God who delivered 5 kings and their army into the hands of Abraham who had only 300 trained servants. The God who was able to give his master Abraham a son in his old age. So, Eliezer turned to this God of his master Abraham and prayed. Having made a stop at a well, at a time where women go to fetch water, this servant prayed saying, “O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham. (Gen 24:12) Behold, I stand here by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water: (Gen 24:13) And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master (Gen 24:14).
Precious One, God is a prayer answering God. The man who prays to God, first, acknowledges Him that He is, and also places his confidence in God’s ability.
See, It is a good thing to trust in the Lord with all your heart. Do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will direct your path (Prov 3:5-6). Before Eliezer would finish praying, a beautiful woman appeared with a pitcher on her shoulder. She was coming to fetch water. She was Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel and grand-daughter of Nahor, Abraham’s brother (Gen 24:15). Was this a coincidence? Having filled her pitcher with water, Eliezer run to her to ask her if he could drink from her pitcher. Quickly, Rebekah lowered her pitcher for him, and also offered to fetch water for his camels. Remember, a camel can drink up to 25 gallons of water at a go. Eliezer was not only looking for a virgin and beautiful lady but also a lady with a willing heart, humble spirit and a strong back to backstop Isaac. Here stood that woman, Rebekah daughter of Bethuel. There, Eliezer knew God has answered his prayer.
Beloved, can you rely on the unfailing arm of God? Can you put your trust and confidence in the Most High?
Are you at a crossroad or at a juncture where retreating is cowardice, halting is disastrous and yet it is impossible to go forward? Turn to Jesus in prayer; ask for His help and let go the burden from you to Him and divine providence will flow to you. Remain the blessed of the Lord.
